| The total area of land in Wyoming is 97,100 square miles. There are on average 5.1 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 493,782 people living in the state within 193,608 households (averaging 2.48 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 544,270 with an estimated 10.2% change. The average income per person in 1999 for Wyoming was $19,134. By 2007 the income was $47,047. The average income in each household was $54,735 in 2008. The percentage of Wyoming residents living in poverty in 2008 was 9.5%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $24,618 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $42,506 in 2007. In 2009 there were about 249,306 housing units within the state of Wyoming, a change of 25,452 from 2000 (or about 11.4%).
