West Virginia Population, Demographics, and Statistics
The total area of land in West Virginia is 24,077 square miles. There are on average 75.1 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 1,808,344 people living in the state within 736,481 households (averaging 2.40 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 1,819,777 with an estimated 0.6% change.

The average income per person in 1999 for West Virginia was $16,477. By 2007 the income was $29,385. The average income in each household was $37,528 in 2008. The percentage of West Virginia residents living in poverty in 2008 was 17.4%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $53,181 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $39,351 in 2007.

In 2009 there were about 893,813 housing units within the state of West Virginia, a change of 49,190 from 2000 (or about 5.8%). The percentage of housing units that were occupied by the owner in 2000 was 75.2%.
