| The total area of land in Virginia is 39,594 square miles. There are on average 178.8 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 7,078,515 people living in the state within 2,699,173 households (averaging 2.54 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 7,882,590 with an estimated 11.4% change. The average income per person in 1999 for Virginia was $23,975. By 2007 the income was $41,727. The average income in each household was $61,210 in 2008. The percentage of Virginia residents living in poverty in 2008 was 10.2%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $321,245 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $51,108 in 2007. In 2009 there were about 3,330,461 housing units within the state of Virginia, a change of 426,020 from 2000 (or about 14.7%). The percentage of housing units that were occupied by the owner in 2000 was 68.1%.
