The total area of land in Vermont is 9,249 square miles. There are on average 65.8 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 608,827 people living in the state within 240,634 households (averaging 2.44 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 621,760 with an estimated 2.1% change.

The average income per person in 1999 for Vermont was $20,625. By 2007 the income was $37,483. The average income in each household was $52,111 in 2008. The percentage of Vermont residents living in poverty in 2008 was 10.4%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $23,267 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $38,465 in 2007.

In 2009 there were about 314,246 housing units within the state of Vermont, a change of 19,867 from 2000 (or about 6.7%). The percentage of housing units that were occupied by the owner in 2000 was 70.6%.
