| The total area of land in Utah is 82,143 square miles. There are on average 27.2 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 2,233,169 people living in the state within 701,281 households (averaging 3.13 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 2,784,572 with an estimated 24.7% change. The average income per person in 1999 for Utah was $18,185. By 2007 the income was $29,831. The average income in each household was $56,820 in 2008. The percentage of Utah residents living in poverty in 2008 was 9.7%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $79,618 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $39,651 in 2007. In 2009 there were about 952,830 housing units within the state of Utah, a change of 184,227 from 2000 (or about 24.0%). The percentage of housing units that were occupied by the owner in 2000 was 71.5%. The median value of each house was about $146,100 in the state in 2000. 9,982 building permits were issued in 2009 totaling $1,573,372 (thousands of dollars) in estimated value. The population classified as white was 2,580,338 (92.7%), black: 38,164 (1.4%), Asian: 57,120 (2.1%), two or more races: 48,032 (1.7%), Hispanic or Latino: 343,164 (12.3%). The total listed sales for manufacturing in Utah was $25,104,045 (thousands of dollars) in 2002, total listed wholesale sales was $22,905,100 (thousands of dollars), and total listed retail sales of $23,675,432 (thousands of dollars).
