The total area of land in Texas is 261,797 square miles. There are on average 79.6 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 20,851,820 people living in the state within 7,393,354 households (averaging 2.74 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 24,782,302 with an estimated 18.8% change.

The average income per person in 1999 for Texas was $19,617. By 2007 the income was $37,083. The average income in each household was $50,049 in 2008. The percentage of Texas residents living in poverty in 2008 was 15.8%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $884,191 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $51,305 in 2007.

In 2009 there were about 9,724,251 housing units within the state of Texas, a change of 1,566,684 from 2000 (or about 19.2%).
