The total area of land in Tennessee is 41,217 square miles. There are on average 138.0 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 5,689,283 people living in the state within 2,232,905 households (averaging 2.48 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 6,296,254 with an estimated 10.7% change.

The average income per person in 1999 for Tennessee was $19,393. By 2007 the income was $33,395. The average income in each household was $43,610 in 2008. The percentage of Tennessee residents living in poverty in 2008 was 15.5%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $205,350 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $42,998 in 2007.

In 2009 there were about 2,780,911 housing units within the state of Tennessee, a change of 341,466 from 2000 (or about 14.0%). The percentage of housing units that were occupied by the owner in 2000 was 69.9%.
