The total area of land in South Dakota is 75,884 square miles. There are on average 9.9 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 754,844 people living in the state within 290,245 households (averaging 2.50 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 812,383 with an estimated 7.6% change.

The average income per person in 1999 for South Dakota was $17,562. By 2007 the income was $35,760. The average income in each household was $46,244 in 2008. The percentage of South Dakota residents living in poverty in 2008 was 12.7%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $28,454 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $36,089 in 2007.

In 2009 there were about 365,532 housing units within the state of South Dakota, a change of 42,330 from 2000 (or about 13.1%). The percentage of housing units that were occupied by the owner in 2000 was 68.2%. The median value of each house was about $79,600 in the state in 2000. 3,691 building permits were issued in 2009 totaling $463,529 (thousands of dollars) in estimated value.

The number of South Dakota births in the year 2006 was 11,919 while the number of deaths occuring during the same year was 7,084. Infant deaths that year numbered 82.
