The total area of land in Rhode Island is 1,044 square miles. There are on average 1,003 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 1,048,319 people living in the state within 408,424 households (averaging 2.47 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 1,053,209 with an estimated 0.5% change.

The average income per person in 1999 for Rhode Island was $21,688. By 2007 the income was $39,829. The average income in each household was $54,562 in 2008. The percentage of Rhode Island residents living in poverty in 2008 was 12.1%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $41,946 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $47,224 in 2007.

In 2009 there were about 452,191 housing units within the state of Rhode Island, a change of 12,355 from 2000 (or about 2.8%).
