| The total area of land in Oregon is 95,996 square miles. There are on average 35.6 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 3,421,399 people living in the state within 1,333,723 households (averaging 2.51 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 3,825,657 with an estimated 11.8% change. The average income per person in 1999 for Oregon was $20,940. By 2007 the income was $35,143. The average income in each household was $50,165 in 2008. The percentage of Oregon residents living in poverty in 2008 was 13.5%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $131,278 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $42,557 in 2007. In 2009 there were about 1,638,583 housing units within the state of Oregon, a change of 185,857 from 2000 (or about 12.8%).
