| The total area of land in Oklahoma is 68,667 square miles. There are on average 50.3 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 3,450,654 people living in the state within 1,342,293 households (averaging 2.49 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 3,687,050 with an estimated 6.9% change. The average income per person in 1999 for Oklahoma was $17,646. By 2007 the income was $34,997. The average income in each household was $42,836 in 2008. The percentage of Oklahoma residents living in poverty in 2008 was 15.7%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $126,273 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $42,719 in 2007. In 2009 there were about 1,650,445 housing units within the state of Oklahoma, a change of 136,051 from 2000 (or about 9.0%). The percentage of housing units that were occupied by the owner in 2000 was 68.4%.
