| The total area of land in Ohio is 40,948 square miles. There are on average 277.3 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 11,353,140 people living in the state within 4,445,773 households (averaging 2.49 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 11,542,645 with an estimated 1.7% change. The average income per person in 1999 for Ohio was $21,003. By 2007 the income was $34,468. The average income in each household was $48,011 in 2008. The percentage of Ohio residents living in poverty in 2008 was 13.3%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $395,614 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $43,892 in 2007. In 2009 there were about 5,094,202 housing units within the state of Ohio, a change of 311,133 from 2000 (or about 6.5%). The percentage of housing units that were occupied by the owner in 2000 was 69.1%.
