The total area of land in North Dakota is 68,975 square miles. There are on average 9.3 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 642,200 people living in the state within 257,152 households (averaging 2.41 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 646,844 with an estimated 0.7% change.

The average income per person in 1999 for North Dakota was $17,769. By 2007 the income was $36,082. The average income in each household was $45,996 in 2008. The percentage of North Dakota residents living in poverty in 2008 was 11.5%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $23,017 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $38,430 in 2007.

In 2009 there were about 316,435 housing units within the state of North Dakota, a change of 26,758 from 2000 (or about 9.2%). The percentage of housing units that were occupied by the owner in 2000 was 66.6%. The median value of each house was about $74,400 in the state in 2000. 3,195 building permits were issued in 2009 totaling $352,449 (thousands of dollars) in estimated value.
