The total area of land in North Carolina is 48,710 square miles. There are on average 165.2 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 8,049,313 people living in the state within 3,132,013 households (averaging 2.49 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 9,380,884 with an estimated 16.6% change.

The average income per person in 1999 for North Carolina was $20,307. By 2007 the income was $33,735. The average income in each household was $46,574 in 2008. The percentage of North Carolina residents living in poverty in 2008 was 14.6%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $305,022 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $42,275 in 2007.

In 2009 there were about 4,239,662 housing units within the state of North Carolina, a change of 717,364 from 2000 (or about 20.4%).
