| The total area of land in North Carolina is 48,710 square miles. There are on average 165.2 people living within each square mile of the state. The average income per person in 1999 for North Carolina was $20,307. By 2007 the income was $33,735. The average income in each household was $46,574 in 2008. The percentage of North Carolina residents living in poverty in 2008 was 14.6%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $305,022 (in millions of dollars).
