| The total area of land in New York is 47,213 square miles. There are on average 401.9 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 18,976,457 people living in the state within 7,056,860 households (averaging 2.61 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 19,541,453 with an estimated 3.0% change. The average income per person in 1999 for New York was $23,389. By 2007 the income was $46,364. The average income in each household was $55,980 in 2008. The percentage of New York residents living in poverty in 2008 was 13.7%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $900,819 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $65,852 in 2007. In 2009 there were about 8,017,263 housing units within the state of New York, a change of 337,960 from 2000 (or about 4.4%). The percentage of housing units that were occupied by the owner in 2000 was 53.0%.
