New Mexico Population, Demographics, and Statistics
The total area of land in New Mexico is 121,355 square miles. There are on average 15.0 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 1,819,046 people living in the state within 677,971 households (averaging 2.63 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 2,009,671 with an estimated 10.5% change.

The average income per person in 1999 for New Mexico was $17,261. By 2007 the income was $30,706. The average income in each household was $43,719 in 2008. The percentage of New Mexico residents living in poverty in 2008 was 17.0%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $60,318 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $39,552 in 2007.

In 2009 there were about 875,778 housing units within the state of New Mexico, a change of 95,200 from 2000 (or about 12.2%). The percentage of housing units that were occupied by the owner in 2000 was 70.0%. The median value of each house was about $108,100 in the state in 2000. 4,642 building permits were issued in 2009 totaling $769,499 (thousands of dollars) in estimated value.

The number of New Mexico births in the year 2006 was 29,936 while the number of deaths occuring during the same year was 15,296. Infant deaths that year numbered 173.




In 2007, New Mexico jobs totaled 1,115,677 across all industries. This was a change of 142,723 jobs from 2000. The number of New Mexico jobs in government in 2007 was 210,152. Workers traveled an average of 21.9 minutes to work each day.

There were 136,711 businesses in New Mexico in 2002. These include 30.9% of businesses listed as owned by women, 1.1% of businesses owned by blacks, 21.7% of businesses owned by Hispanics, 1.7% of businesses owned by Asians, and 5.0% of businesses listed as owned by American Indians and Alaska Natives.

In 2000 36.5% of residents spoke a language other than English at home. The percent of the state's population who were born in a foreign country was 8.2%.

The percentage of adults in New Mexico over the age of twenty-five who graduated high school as of 2000 was 78.9%. About 23.5% of county residents held at least a four-year college degree.

The number of people in New Mexico with a disability is 338,430.

There were 955,904 civilians working in New Mexico in 2009. The number unemployed was 68,546 (or 7.2% of the workforce).

The total sales of businesses involved in serving food and accommodation was $2,771,474 (thousands of dollars).

The estimated breakdown of population by age in 2009 included 151,988 residents less than five years old, (7.6% of residents), 510,238 less than eighteen years old (25.4% of residents), and 261,342 of the population of New Mexico was over the age of sixty-five (13.0% of residents).

The percentage of the population who were female in 2009 was 50.5%. The population classified as white was 1,680,251 (83.6%), black: 62,773 (3.1%), Asian: 30,160 (1.5%), two or more races: 38,008 (1.9%), Hispanic or Latino: 915,738 (45.6%).

The total listed sales for manufacturing in New Mexico was $10,168,130 (thousands of dollars) in 2002, total listed wholesale sales was $8,993,729 (thousands of dollars), and total listed retail sales of $18,328,637 (thousands of dollars). The total for all industries in earnings was $44,127,534 (thousands of dollars).
