| The total area of land in Montana is 145,552 square miles. There are on average 6.2 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 902,195 people living in the state within 358,667 households (averaging 2.45 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 974,989 with an estimated 8.1% change. The average income per person in 1999 for Montana was $17,151. By 2007 the income was $33,225. The average income in each household was $43,948 in 2008. The percentage of Montana residents living in poverty in 2008 was 14.1%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $31,783 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $34,433 in 2007. In 2009 there were about 441,279 housing units within the state of Montana, a change of 28,648 from 2000 (or about 6.9%).
