The total area of land in Minnesota is 79,610 square miles. There are on average 61.8 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 4,919,479 people living in the state within 1,895,127 households (averaging 2.52 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 5,266,214 with an estimated 7.0% change.

The average income per person in 1999 for Minnesota was $23,198. By 2007 the income was $41,105. The average income in each household was $57,318 in 2008. The percentage of Minnesota residents living in poverty in 2008 was 9.6%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $213,022 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $46,982 in 2007.

In 2009 there were about 2,332,105 housing units within the state of Minnesota, a change of 266,151 from 2000 (or about 12.9%). The percentage of housing units that were occupied by the owner in 2000 was 74.6%. The median value of each house was about $122,400 in the state in 2000. 9,425 building permits were issued in 2009 totaling $1,712,057 (thousands of dollars) in estimated value.

The number of Minnesota births in the year 2006 was 73,525 while the number of deaths occuring during the same year was 37,028. Infant deaths that year numbered 381.
