| The total area of land in Michigan is 56,803 square miles. There are on average 175.0 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 9,938,444 people living in the state within 3,785,661 households (averaging 2.56 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 9,969,727 with an estimated 0.3% change. The average income per person in 1999 for Michigan was $22,168. By 2007 the income was $34,423. The average income in each household was $48,606 in 2008. The percentage of Michigan residents living in poverty in 2008 was 14.4%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $345,940 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $48,082 in 2007. In 2009 there were about 4,541,693 housing units within the state of Michigan, a change of 307,431 from 2000 (or about 7.3%).
