The total area of land in Massachusetts is 7,840 square miles. There are on average 809.8 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 6,349,097 people living in the state within 2,443,580 households (averaging 2.51 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 6,593,587 with an estimated 3.9% change.

The average income per person in 1999 for Massachusetts was $25,952. By 2007 the income was $48,995. The average income in each household was $65,304 in 2008. The percentage of Massachusetts residents living in poverty in 2008 was 10.1%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $316,896 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $59,458 in 2007.

In 2009 there were about 2,747,100 housing units within the state of Massachusetts, a change of 125,093 from 2000 (or about 4.8%). The percentage of housing units that were occupied by the owner in 2000 was 61.7%.
