| The total area of land in Maryland is 9,773 square miles. There are on average 541.9 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 5,296,486 people living in the state within 1,980,859 households (averaging 2.61 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 5,699,478 with an estimated 7.6% change. The average income per person in 1999 for Maryland was $25,614. By 2007 the income was $46,471. The average income in each household was $70,482 in 2008. The percentage of Maryland residents living in poverty in 2008 was 8.2%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $261,115 (in millions of dollars).
