Maine Population, Demographics, and Statistics
The total area of land in Maine is 30,861 square miles. There are on average 41.3 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 1,274,923 people living in the state within 518,200 households (averaging 2.39 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 1,318,301 with an estimated 3.4% change.

The average income per person in 1999 for Maine was $19,533. By 2007 the income was $33,991. The average income in each household was $46,419 in 2008. The percentage of Maine residents living in poverty in 2008 was 12.6%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $44,711 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $37,561 in 2007.

In 2009 there were about 704,578 housing units within the state of Maine, a change of 52,681 from 2000 (or about 8.1%). The percentage of housing units that were occupied by the owner in 2000 was 71.6%. The median value of each house was about $98,700 in the state in 2000. 3,121 building permits were issued in 2009 totaling $493,221 (thousands of dollars) in estimated value.

The number of Maine births in the year 2006 was 14,151 while the number of deaths occuring during the same year was 12,294. Infant deaths that year numbered 89.
