The total area of land in Louisiana is 43,561 square miles. There are on average 102.6 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 4,468,976 people living in the state within 1,656,053 households (averaging 2.62 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 4,492,076 with an estimated 0.5% change.

The average income per person in 1999 for Louisiana was $16,912. By 2007 the income was $35,100. The average income in each household was $43,635 in 2008. The percentage of Louisiana residents living in poverty in 2008 was 17.6%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $153,504 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $43,123 in 2007.

In 2009 there were about 1,963,536 housing units within the state of Louisiana, a change of 116,359 from 2000 (or about 6.3%).
