The total area of land in Kansas is 81,814 square miles. There are on average 32.9 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 2,688,418 people living in the state within 1,037,891 households (averaging 2.51 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 2,818,747 with an estimated 4.8% change.

The average income per person in 1999 for Kansas was $20,506. By 2007 the income was $36,525. The average income in each household was $50,174 in 2008. The percentage of Kansas residents living in poverty in 2008 was 11.3%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $101,444 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $41,694 in 2007.
