The total area of land in Iowa is 55,869 square miles. There are on average 52.4 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 2,926,324 people living in the state within 1,149,276 households (averaging 2.46 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 3,007,856 with an estimated 2.8% change.

The average income per person in 1999 for Iowa was $19,674. By 2007 the income was $34,916. The average income in each household was $49,007 in 2008. The percentage of Iowa residents living in poverty in 2008 was 11.4%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $104,168 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $38,931 in 2007.

In 2009 there were about 1,334,418 housing units within the state of Iowa, a change of 101,883 from 2000 (or about 8.3%). The percentage of housing units that were occupied by the owner in 2000 was 72.3%. The median value of each house was about $82,500 in the state in 2000. 7,729 building permits were issued in 2009 totaling $1,198,249 (thousands of dollars) in estimated value.

The number of Iowa births in the year 2006 was 40,607 while the number of deaths occuring during the same year was 27,362. Infant deaths that year numbered 208.
