| The total area of land in Indiana is 35,866 square miles. There are on average 169.5 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 6,080,485 people living in the state within 2,336,306 households (averaging 2.53 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 6,423,113 with an estimated 5.6% change. The average income per person in 1999 for Indiana was $20,397. By 2007 the income was $33,215. The average income in each household was $48,010 in 2008. The percentage of Indiana residents living in poverty in 2008 was 12.9%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $210,448 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $42,521 in 2007. In 2009 there were about 2,809,559 housing units within the state of Indiana, a change of 277,228 from 2000 (or about 10.9%).
