| The total area of land in Illinois is 55,583 square miles. There are on average 223.4 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 12,419,293 people living in the state within 4,591,779 households (averaging 2.63 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 12,910,409 with an estimated 4.0% change. The average income per person in 1999 for Illinois was $23,104. By 2007 the income was $41,012. The average income in each household was $56,230 in 2008. The percentage of Illinois residents living in poverty in 2008 was 12.2%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $526,006 (in millions of dollars).
