Hawaii Population, Demographics, and Statistics
The total area of land in Hawaii is 6,422 square miles. There are on average 188.6 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 1,211,537 people living in the state within 403,240 households (averaging 2.92 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 1,295,178 with an estimated 6.9% change.

The average income per person in 1999 for Hawaii was $21,525. By 2007 the income was $39,242. The average income in each household was $66,701 in 2008. The percentage of Hawaii residents living in poverty in 2008 was 9.3%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $50,125 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $45,266 in 2007.

In 2009 there were about 515,538 housing units within the state of Hawaii, a change of 54,997 from 2000 (or about 11.9%). The percentage of housing units that were occupied by the owner in 2000 was 56.5%. The median value of each house was about $272,700 in the state in 2000. 2,617 building permits were issued in 2009 totaling $779,009 (thousands of dollars) in estimated value.

The number of Hawaii births in the year 2006 was 18,982 while the number of deaths occuring during the same year was 9,432. Infant deaths that year numbered 107.




In 2007, Hawaii jobs totaled 873,157 across all industries. This was a change of 109,873 jobs from 2000. The number of Hawaii jobs in government in 2007 was 176,244. Workers traveled an average of 26.1 minutes to work each day.
