| The total area of land in Georgia is 57,906 square miles. There are on average 141.4 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 8,186,453 people living in the state within 3,006,369 households (averaging 2.65 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 9,829,211 with an estimated 20.1% change. The average income per person in 1999 for Georgia was $21,154. By 2007 the income was $33,499. The average income in each household was $50,834 in 2008. The percentage of Georgia residents living in poverty in 2008 was 14.7%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $319,018 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $45,321 in 2007. In 2009 there were about 4,062,400 housing units within the state of Georgia, a change of 780,558 from 2000 (or about 23.8%). The percentage of housing units that were occupied by the owner in 2000 was 67.5%.
