| The total area of land in Connecticut is 4,844 square miles. There are on average 702.9 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 3,405,565 people living in the state within 1,301,670 households (averaging 2.53 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 3,518,288 with an estimated 3.3% change. The average income per person in 1999 for Connecticut was $28,766. By 2007 the income was $54,981. The average income in each household was $68,294 in 2008. The percentage of Connecticut residents living in poverty in 2008 was 9.1%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $191,877 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $63,127 in 2007. In 2009 there were about 1,445,825 housing units within the state of Connecticut, a change of 59,825 from 2000 (or about 4.3%).
