| The total area of land in California is 155,959 square miles. There are on average 217.2 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 33,871,648 people living in the state within 11,502,870 households (averaging 2.87 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 36,961,664 with an estimated 9.1% change. The average income per person in 1999 for California was $22,711. By 2007 the income was $41,805. The average income in each household was $61,017 in 2008. The percentage of California residents living in poverty in 2008 was 13.3%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $1,520,755 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $54,896 in 2007. In 2009 there were about 13,433,691 housing units within the state of California, a change of 1,219,143 from 2000 (or about 10.0%). The percentage of housing units that were occupied by the owner in 2000 was 56.9%.
