The total area of land in Arkansas is 52,068 square miles. There are on average 51.3 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 2,673,400 people living in the state within 1,042,696 households (averaging 2.49 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 2,889,450 with an estimated 8.1% change.

The average income per person in 1999 for Arkansas was $16,904. By 2007 the income was $30,177. The average income in each household was $38,820 in 2008. The percentage of Arkansas residents living in poverty in 2008 was 17.3%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $85,418 (in millions of dollars).
