| The total area of land in Alaska is 571,951 square miles. There are on average 1.1 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 626,932 people living in the state within 221,600 households (averaging 2.74 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 698,473 with an estimated 11.4% change. The average income per person in 1999 for Alaska was $22,660. By 2007 the income was $40,042. The average income in each household was $67,332 in 2008. The percentage of Alaska residents living in poverty in 2008 was 9.2%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $27,273 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $50,830 in 2007. In 2009 there were about 283,879 housing units within the state of Alaska, a change of 22,916 from 2000 (or about 8.8%). The percentage of housing units that were occupied by the owner in 2000 was 62.5%. The median value of each house was about $144,200 in the state in 2000. 916 building permits were issued in 2009 totaling $195,223 (thousands of dollars) in estimated value. The percentage of the population who were female in 2009 was 48.1%. The population classified as white was 490,858 (70.3%), black: 29,396 (4.2%), Asian: 34,590 (5.0%), two or more races: 32,507 (4.7%), Hispanic or Latino: 44,480 (6.4%). The total listed sales for manufacturing in Alaska was $3,832,024 (thousands of dollars) in 2002, total listed wholesale sales was $3,616,674 (thousands of dollars), and total listed retail sales of $7,437,071 (thousands of dollars).
