The total area of land in Alabama is 50,744 square miles. There are on average 87.6 people living within each square mile of the state. In 2000 there were 4,447,100 people living in the state within 1,737,080 households (averaging 2.49 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 4,708,708 with an estimated 5.9% change.

The average income per person in 1999 for Alabama was $18,189. By 2007 the income was $32,419. The average income in each household was $42,586 in 2008. The percentage of Alabama residents living in poverty in 2008 was 15.9%. The total personal income for the state in 2007 was $149,991 (in millions of dollars). The average per job earnings was $41,148 in 2007.

In 2009 there were about 2,180,860 housing units within the state of Alabama, a change of 217,001 from 2000 (or about 11.0%). The percentage of housing units that were occupied by the owner in 2000 was 72.5%.
