The total area of the land in San Diego County is 4,199 square miles. There are on average 670.0 people living within each square mile of the county. In 2000 there were 2,813,833 people living in the county within 994,677 households (averaging 2.73 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 3,053,793 with an estimated 8.5% change.

The average income per person in 1999 for San Diego County, CA was $22,926. By 2007 the income was $44,430. The average income in each household was $62,820 in 2008. The percentage of San Diego County residents living in poverty in 2008 was 12.6%. The total personal income for the county in 2007 was $131,500 (in millions of dollars).
