The total area of the land in Maricopa County is 9,203 square miles. There are on average 333.8 people living within each square mile of the county. In 2000 there were 3,072,149 people living in the county within 1,132,886 households (averaging 2.67 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had increased to 4,023,132 with an estimated 31.0% change.
