The total area of the land in Cook County is 945.68 square miles. There are on average 5,683 people living within each square mile of the county. In 2000 there were 5,376,741 people living in the county within 1,974,181 households (averaging 2.68 people in each household) but by 2009 the population had decreased to 5,287,037 with an estimated -1.7% change.

The average income per person in 1999 for Cook County, IL was $23,227. By 2007 the income was $45,230. The average income in each household was $54,559 in 2008. The percentage of Cook County residents living in poverty in 2008 was 14.8%. The total personal income for the county in 2007 was $238,426 (in millions of dollars).
